Furosemide tablets are for use by patients who suffer from edema and/or congestive heart failure or have hypertension who have a rare inherited condition called “familial edema”. Furosemide tablets are also used to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and enlarged prostate.
Furosemide tablets contain the active ingredient Furosemide.
Furosemide tablets are usually taken orally with a glass of water. Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not crush or chew the tablet. Furosemide tablets can be taken with or without food. However, if you have trouble swallowing furosemide tablets, this may be easier to do with furosemide tablets which are available in a lower strength tablet (Lasix).
The most common side effects of furosemide tablets are headache, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, and back pain. Some of the more serious side effects may include muscle weakness, seizures, irregular heartbeat, and loss of consciousness. Furosemide tablets should not be used by patients with a history of severe dehydration (such as blood in the urine or blood loss from the kidneys), electrolyte imbalance (such as low levels of potassium, magnesium, sodium, or magnesium oxide), or liver problems. Patients with a family history of BPH should also not take this medicine.
Patients who take this medicine may experience fluid retention (edema) and swelling, especially if they are dehydrated. Furosemide tablets can also cause changes in the heart rhythm (QT prolongation). QT prolongation is a risk factor for the development of furosemide side effects including arrhythmias, torsade de pointes, torsade de pointes related to the electrical activity of the heart. QT prolongation can occur even if the patient is not using furosemide tablets. Furosemide tablets are not recommended for use in patients who have a family history of heart failure, who have high blood pressure, who are at risk of having a stroke or have a family history of sudden cardiac death. Furosemide tablets should not be used in patients who are at risk of developing furosemide side effects, such as those with a family history of arrhythmias or who have had a heart attack. Furosemide tablets can increase the risk of bleeding and other stomach ulcers. Patients should be advised to wash their hands before and after taking furosemide tablets to prevent the spread of infection.
Information on how to take Furosemide tablets safely is available on the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency website.

Lasix is used to treat high blood pressure and edema (fluid retention). High blood pressure is a dangerous—potentially fatal—condition in which the heart is met with too much resistance from blocked or narrowed arteries as it tries to pump blood and oxygen around your body. High blood pressure can lead to serious health issues, including heart attacks, heart failure, strokes, and many more complications when not treated. Nearly half of Americans have high blood pressure, and heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States.
Edema is the medical term for swelling caused by fluid trapped in the body’s tissue. This swelling is often a symptom, not a condition, caused by diverse medical problems, including inactivity, venous insufficiency, heart failure, kidney disease, and more. Edema commonly leads to swelling, difficulty with movement, and difficulty breathing. When left untreated, excess fluid in the body can increase blood pressure.
By lowering fluid buildup in the body, Lasix helps lower blood pressure. It should be noted that Lasix is prescribed along with a healthy diet and physical exercise to reduce blood pressure. Doctors do not use Lasix alone to treat high blood pressure.
How can I take it?The most common starting dose of Lasix is 5 mg three times a day, taken as needed. The dose can be reduced to 2.5 mg three times a day, taken as needed. If your doctor has other questions, always consult with your doctor.
Doctors prescribe Lasix because it helps lower blood pressure. It works by blocking the enzyme sodium-QUatregate reuptake inhibitors (ookiees) in the brain. This increased blood pressure lower blood pressure makes the condition considered low- blood pressure an even higher condition than hypertension. Less blood pressure is needed to achieve and maintain a healthy heart rate.
This condition is listed in the National Library of Medicine’s 2016 “The Cleveland Clinic Case Control Manual” on how to take it. The Cleveland Clinic is a non-profit academic medical center.
